Goal
By the end of this course, participants will understand how proactive safety management and human factors knowledge combine to reduce risk and improve safety across the aviation system. The course highlights ICAO’s role in promoting safety standards and explores the critical importance of safety management systems (SMS) and state safety programmes in fostering a culture of continuous safety improvement.
Course Description
This self-paced course is part of the Fundamentals of International Aviation Online Training Programme. Delivered in three (3) units, the course introduces the foundational concepts of aviation safety, focusing on the integration of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and human factors science. Learners will explore how human performance, decision-making, and organizational safety culture influence aviation safety outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants should be able to:
- Outline several human factors issues that impact all aviation professionals
- Review some of the major human factor issues that affect aviation safety
- Discuss the organizational approach to safety, including associated ICAO standards linked to state safety programmes and safety management systems

Primary Target Population
Primary target audience:
Aspiring aviation professionals, individuals transitioning into the aviation sector, Civil Aviation Authorities, airline operators, and other aviation industry stakeholders.
Secondary target audience:
Experienced aviation professionals, including those working with training organizations or as aviation consultants.
Certificate
The participant must achieve a score of 80% to pass the final exam. Note that participants are allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts only. Upon successfully completing the exam, the participant will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
