Goal

The course provides Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator for Air Traffic Services Personnel with competencies to control all aspects of a full aeronautical search and rescue operation in accordance with ICAO Annex 12 Search and Rescue, ICAO Doc 9731 International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual, Vol I and South African Maritime and Aeronautical Search and Rescue Act, 2002 (Act 44 of 2002). 


Learning Objectives

After the completion of the course the participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss search and rescue organisation.
  2. Identify various search and rescue facility resources available.
  3. Identify various types of signal codes that are used during a search and rescue mission.
  4. Identify the different types of search and rescue stages.
  5. Appreciate the COSPAS-SARSAT Programme and its uses in AMSAR
  6. Identify the sequences of events which apply to the three phases of search and rescue; and ATC Search and Rescue actions.
  7. Apply the different search planning computations and appropriate search pattern types.
  8. Conduct search and rescue briefing and debriefing accurately
  9. Demonstrate how to coordinate a search and rescue operation.

Primary Target Population

  1. Air Traffic Control Officers


Secondary Target Population

  1. Unit Managers or Manager Air Traffic Services
  2. ATSOs working in the ARCC


Entry Requirements

  1. Matric or Grade 12
  2. English Language Level 4 both written and spoken;
  3. The trainees should hold an ATS Rating or validated as an ATS Personnel
