Aviation Sustainability – Global Air Navigation
Goal
This course aims to demonstrate how modern air navigation systems enhance aviation’s environmental and operational sustainability. Learners will:
- Understand the goals and structure of the Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP).
- Recognize the sustainability benefits of performance-based navigation (PBN).
- Identify methods of flight optimization that improve fuel efficiency.
- Explore how navigation systems are adapting to new technologies, including remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS).
Course Description
This online course introduces how global air navigation systems and procedures support the aviation industry’s sustainability goals. It highlights the efficiency benefits of performance-based navigation (PBN), the structure and objectives of ICAO’s Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP), and flight-optimization strategies that reduce emissions and fuel use. Learners also explore how evolving navigation systems are integrating remotely piloted aircraft and other emerging airspace users while maintaining environmental and operational efficiency.
This course is included in the Aviation Sustainability online training programme and may also be taken individually. For a foundation in aviation sustainability concepts, learners are encouraged—but not required—to complete Aviation Sustainability: Introduction to Aviation Sustainability before beginning this course.
Learning Objectives
• Define performance-based navigation (PBN) and its sustainability benefits.
• Describe the goals and structure of the Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP).
• Outline how flight optimization can improve sustainability.
• Describe how aircraft navigation systems are responding to the increased use of remotely piloted aircraft.
Course Structure
1. Introduction to Performance-Based Navigation (PBN)
2. ICAO’s Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP)
3. Flight Optimization for Sustainability
4. New Technologies
5. Final Exam
Evaluation and certification
- Final Exam: 80% Grade mark/ 3 attempts
- Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
Primary Target Population
