Goal

This course aims to help learners understand how sustainability is embedded in airline operations and corporate governance. Learners will: 

  • Recognize how CSR and ESG frameworks guide airline sustainability strategies. 
  • Understand passenger rights and accessibility considerations within a sustainable aviation system. 
  • Identify practical approaches to reducing cabin and in-flight waste. 

Course Description

This course provides an overview of sustainability within airline operations, including accessibility, customer experience, passenger rights, fuel considerations, and waste management. Learners examine how airlines integrate environmental, social, and economic considerations into daily operations and long-term planning. Media-rich activities and case examples highlight how airlines balance regulatory requirements, efficiency, customer safety, and social responsibility in advancing sustainability.


This course is included in the Aviation Sustainability online training programme and may also be taken individually. For a foundation in aviation sustainability concepts, learners are encouraged—but not required—to complete Aviation Sustainability: Introduction to Aviation Sustainability before beginning this course.



Learning Objectives

• Describe how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) apply to airlines. 

• Outline some common passenger bill of rights for aviation. 

• Outline the need for and challenges with accessibility for persons with disabilities. 

• Describe the challenges and opportunities for reducing cabin waste.

 Evaluation and certification

  • Final Exam: 80% Grade mark/ 3 attempts 
  • Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate. 



Primary Target Population

All aviation professionals seeking to develop a baseline understanding of sustainability as it applies to civil aviation, including airline, airport, and regulatory personnel, as well as professionals transitioning into aviation from other industries. No previous background or experience in sustainability is required.


Secondary Target Population

Students, educators, consultants, and support-service providers who wish to understand sustainability principles within aviation operations.
