Aviation Sustainability – Governance
Goal
This course introduces participants to the concept of governance as a cornerstone of sustainability in aviation. Learners will:
- Understand why effective governance is essential to achieving sustainability outcomes.
- Recognize how sustainability is integrated into ICAO’s policies, standards, and strategic planning.
- Identify the primary roles ICAO and other aviation organizations play in advancing sustainability worldwide.
Course Description
This course examines the governance frameworks and regulatory structures that guide sustainable development in civil aviation. Learners explore how States, ICAO, and other stakeholders contribute to sustainability through policies, standards, international agreements, and long-term planning initiatives. Through interactive content and case-based examples, the course illustrates how governance decisions influence environmental performance, social responsibility, and economic resilience across the aviation system.
This course is included in the Aviation Sustainability online training programme and may also be taken individually. For a foundation in aviation sustainability concepts, learners are encouraged—but not required—to complete Aviation Sustainability: Introduction to Aviation Sustainability before beginning this course.

Evaluation and certification
- Final Exam: 80% Grade mark/ 3 attempts
- Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
Primary Target Population
All aviation professionals seeking to develop a baseline understanding of sustainability as it applies to civil aviation, including airline, airport, and regulatory personnel, as well as professionals transitioning into aviation from other industries. No previous background or experience in sustainability is required.
Secondary Target Population
Students, educators, consultants, and support-service providers who wish to understand sustainability principles within aviation operations.
