Goal
By the end of this course, participants will understand the significance of aviation accident and incident investigations in promoting proactive safety improvements. The course highlights real-world examples, introduces the global investigation framework, and explores how findings from past events shape future regulations, technologies, and operational standards.
Course Description
This self-paced course is part of the Fundamentals of International Aviation Online Training Programme. Delivered in three (3) units, the course provides an introduction to aviation accidents and incidents, with a focus on how investigations uncover lessons that improve safety. Learners will explore global safety data, investigation procedures, and the factors that contribute to accidents in commercial aviation.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants should be able to:
- Describe the global accident rate and the related costs of an accident
- Explain the role of search and rescue
- Differentiate between accidents and incidents
- Discuss how aviation accidents are investigated, referring to accident investigation authorities and the investigation process
- Explain the primary causal factors of aviation accidents in commercial jet operations

Primary Target Population
Primary target audience:
Aspiring aviation professionals, individuals transitioning into the aviation sector, Civil Aviation Authorities, airline operators, and other aviation industry stakeholders.
Secondary target audience:
Experienced aviation professionals, including those working with training organizations or as aviation consultants.
Certificate
The participant must achieve a score of 80% to pass the final exam. Note that participants are allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts only. Upon successfully completing the exam, the participant will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
