Fundamentals of International Aviation (FoIA EN) - Environment: Online
Goal
By the end of this course, participants will understand the environmental challenges facing the aviation industry and the international efforts to reduce its impact. The course covers topics such as weather forecasting, climate change, emissions, noise pollution, and ICAO’s environmental standards. It also introduces key sustainability goals, including the global net-zero emissions target for aviation by 2050.
Course Description
This self-paced course is part of the Fundamentals of International Aviation Online Training Programme. Delivered in five (5) units, the course explores the critical role of environmental sustainability in air transportation. Learners will examine the relationship between aviation and the environment, including how weather, climate, and international regulation intersect to support sustainable aviation practices.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants should be able to:
- Explain the importance of accurate weather information in aviation
- Describe how the global community cooperates to forecast and disseminate weather data
- Discuss aspects of meteorology and their impacts on aviation operations
- Describe the changing world climate and the impact of significant weather events on aviation
- Explain ICAO’s role in environmental protection, specifically the contents of Annex 16 and the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP)
- Describe the sustainable development goals and net-zero by 2050 target

Primary Target Population
Primary target audience:
Aspiring aviation professionals, individuals transitioning into the aviation sector, Civil Aviation Authorities, airline operators, and other aviation industry stakeholders.
Secondary target audience:
Experienced aviation professionals, including those working with training organizations or as aviation consultants.
Certificate
The participant must achieve a score of 80% to pass the final exam. Note that participants are allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts only. Upon successfully completing the exam, the participant will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
