Goal
By the end of this course, participants will understand the essential principles of air navigation and the responsibilities of air traffic control officers. The course explores global airspace structure, communication protocols, and the international standards and technologies that ensure safe separation and coordination of aircraft around the world.
Course Description
This self-paced course is part of the Fundamentals of International Aviation Online Training Programme. Delivered across four (4) units, the course offers an introduction to global air navigation and the critical role of air traffic controllers in managing aircraft movement across international airspace. Learners will explore the systems, procedures, and technologies that enable safe and efficient flight from departure to arrival.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants should be able to:
- Explain why air traffic management is essential in the aviation industry
- Differentiate between the various roles in which air traffic control officers work and ways in which they ensure safe separation of aircraft
- Discuss why standardized communication is a key consideration in air navigation, including the technologies and standards involved
- Describe the standards and technologies that facilitate global air navigation

Primary Target Population
Primary target audience:
Aspiring aviation professionals, individuals transitioning into the aviation sector, Civil Aviation Authorities, airline operators, and other aviation industry stakeholders.
Secondary target audience:
Experienced aviation professionals, including those working with training organizations or as aviation consultants.
Certificate
The participant must achieve a score of 80% to pass the final exam. Note that participants are allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts only. Upon successfully completing the exam, the participant will receive ICAO’s e-Certificate.
